The new eruption, now called the “Geldingadalsgos” eruption by the Icelandic media, continues steadily. It has been producing slowly advancing lava flows inside the Geldingadal valley. The Icelandic Met Office and local news outlets published many new photos from the ongoing eruption this morning.
The isolated location in Geldingadalur valley means there is no immediate danger to any infrastructure. Volcanic gases are not currently being blown over any towns or villages and are unlikely to cause any problems even if the wind changes direction, according to the Icelandic Met Office (IMO).

Six or more vents above the eruptive fissure have formed smaller and one larger spatter cones, where the activity is concentrated now, mainly from the largest one in the middle, which likely will become the main (and only) active vent in a short time.
There is little lava fountaining from the vents, only mild spattering, but largely degassed magma erupts steadily into flows directed into two main flow fields, a narrower one to the southwest and a broader field to the north and northwest.
Both lava fields have reached approx. 500 m length and the total area covered by new lava was estimated to be around 0.1 km2 with an average thickness of about 10 m, thus giving a total volume of 1 million cubic m and an average eruption rate of approx. 15 m3 per second, similar to the estimates done previously of the magma influx into the dike that is now feeding the eruption.

How long might the eruption continue?
Nobody can know for sure how long this eruption can continue, but most scientists are currently thinking that it might be several weeks or months. It largely depends on how much magma is available (and able to reach the surface), and how long the magma resupply into the dike continues, and how long the current magma pathways are stable (and not changed by new earthquakes, opening of fractures etc).
If the reported dike was 10 km long, about 5 km tall and 1 m wide, it would contain approx. 50 million cubic meters, enough to let the eruption continue for several weeks at the current effusion rate, if about half of what is stored in it now would erupt, not counting the volume added by ongoing supply from deeper levels.

What about the earthquakes?
Earthquakes continue at reduced rate – as lava is flowing freely now, it doesn’t need to break rocks to generate new paths. In fact, no significant shallow quakes have been detected in the area since the eruption. However, deeper earthquakes at 4-6 km depth continue,- something that suggests that in the lower parts of the dike, things are not stable yet and the eruption might evolve in different ways than continue just as it is now.

Ancient burial site threatened by lava flows
As the valley where the eruption is taking place is home to an ancient burial site dating back to before the year 1000, a spot where the remains of the Norse settler Ísólfur frá Ísólfsstöðum lie, now threatened to be covered forever, archeologists rushed into place yesterday to do some “rescue excavations”:
Yesterday archaeologists were trying to get as much information about the possible grave as it was swallowed by the lava. They were frantically trying to do some rescue archeology in front of an approaching wall of lava.

Molecular chemistry is lagging behind in term of open science. Although modelization by quantum mechanics applied to chemistry has become almost mandatory in any major publication, computational raw data is most of the time kept in the labs or destroyed. Furthermore, the software used in this area tend to lack effective quality control and computational details are usually incomplete in the articles and the information may not be reused or reproduced. The first objective of this project is to constitute a large collaborative open platform that will solve and store quantum molecular chemistry results. Original output files will be available to be reused to tackle new chemical studies for different applications. Machine learning and more generally artificial intelligence applied to chemistry data promises to revolutionize this area in the near future, but these methods require a lot of data that this project will be able to provide.

Today, it is impossible for a human to take into account the results, even limited to the most important data, for millions of known molecules. The second objective of this project is to radically change the approach developing artificial intelligence and optimization methods in order to explore efficiently the highly combinatorial molecular space. Generative models aim to provide an artificial assistant, which on the one hand has learned to predict the characteristics of a molecule and estimate its cost of synthesis, and on the other hand is able to browse effectively the molecular space. Generative models would open many perspectives by greatly facilitating the screening of new molecules with many potential applications (energy, medicine, materials, etc.). The bottleneck for our AIs is the computing power needed to verify the properties of the generated molecules.

By supporting this project, you will help chemical researchers around the world by building a unique collection of results. You will also help our AIs to propose much more new targets for the different applications we are addressing than we could do on our own.

Hi all,
Disappointingly, my web host has said they cannot increase my database limit which is disappointing. For historical reasons, each BOINC project is stored in its own database, mainly for manageability. However, due to the rise in projects I’ve now got over 180 databases.

I’ll see if I can move to a one database schema instead but it’s going to take some time and effort to consolidate the records into one database and to update the various bits of code.

For now I will add any new projects to my stats server (it’s separate from the web server) so that the records are are least being saved somewhere for later use.

Unfortunately I have hit my web host’s database limit. Since the site’s creation in 2004 the number of projects has grown considerably. I will need to re-design the database backend in order to be able to cope with more projects. This as you can imagine will take some time and effort. Watch this space.

Just an update.
I’ve got a test version of the site up and running with the new database schema.
I’m now working on a new version of the stats update script to make use of the new schema.
Also an ideal opportunity to convert the code from Perl to Python and modernise it a bit.

The code was written largely in 2004/2005 but it has lasted well.

Nestled among the mountains in southwest China, the world’s largest radio telescope signals Beijing’s ambitions as a global centre for scientific research.

The Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) — the only significant instrument of its kind after the collapse of another telescope in Puerto Rico this month — is about to open its doors for foreign astronomers to use, hoping to attract the world’s top scientific talent.

The world’s second-largest radio telescope, at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, was destroyed when its suspended 900-tonne receiver platform came loose and plunged 140 metres (450 feet) onto the radio dish below.

Wang Qiming, chief inspector of FAST’s operations and development centre, told AFP during a rare visit by the foreign press last week that he had visited Arecibo.

“We drew a lot of inspiration from its structure, which we gradually improved to build our telescope.”

The Chinese installation in Pingtang, Guizhou province, is up to three times more sensitive than the US-owned one, and is surrounded by a five-kilometre (three-mile) “radio silence” zone where mobile phones and computers are not allowed.

Work on the FAST began in 2011 and it started full operations in January this year, working mainly to capture the radio signals emitted by celestial bodies, in particular pulsars — rapidly rotating dead stars.

The 500-metre giant satellite dish is easily the world’s largest — covering the area of 30 football pitches — and cost 1.1 billion yuan ($175 million) to build, as well as displacing thousands of villagers to make room for it.

China has been rapidly boosting its scientific credentials to become less reliant on foreign technology.

The world’s most populous country has so far only won one scientific Nobel Prize — awarded in 2015 to chemist Tu Youyou.

But in the past two decades, China has built the largest high-speed train network in the world, finalised its Beidou geolocation system — a competitor of the American GPS — and is now in the process of bringing lunar samples back to Earth.

China is pouring billions into its military-run space programme and has published a plan to become by 2035 a world leader in artificial intelligence, space, clean energy and robotics.

The data being collected by FAST should allow for a better understanding of the origins of the universe — and aid in the search for alien life.

Closer to home, China has said it will accept requests in 2021 from foreign scientists wishing to carry out measurements.

“Our scientific committee aims to make FAST increasingly open to the international community,” said Wang.

Sun Jinghai, an engineering manager at the site, predicted there would be a lot of take-up.

John Dickey, professor of physics at the University of Tasmania in Australia, said the results so far had been impressive.

“China is certainly a global centre for scientific research, at the same level as North America or Western Europe,” he said.

“The community of researchers is as advanced, as creative, and as well organised as in any advanced nation in the world.”

Improvements in scientific innovation have been rapid, said Denis Simon, an expert on Chinese science policy, adding that “China was viewed as an innovation laggard” only a few years ago.

“More and more discretion and intellectual freedom have been given to the scientific and engineering community to explore new ideas and take bigger risks in the research environment,” he said.

“The risk-averse culture that was once predominant has given way to a more entrepreneurial culture.”

This has included education reforms for new generations of scientists and engineers, he said.

A sign of the change in China’s mentality is that since 2018, foreign scientists have been able to lead state-funded projects.

“In many ways, the competition between China and the US is about a race for talent — and this race promises to build momentum as the competition between the two countries heats up,” he added.

Following the collapse of the historic Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, China has opened the biggest radio telescope in the world up to international scientists.

In Pingtang, Guizhou province stands the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST), the largest radio telescope in the world, surpassing the Arecibo Observatory, which stood as the largest in the world for 53 years before the construction of FAST was completed in 2016. Following two cable failures earlier this year, Arecibo’s radio telescope collapsed in November, shutting down the observatory for good. Now, FAST is opening its doors to astronomers from around the world.

“Our scientific committee aims to make FAST increasingly open to the international community,” Wang Qiming, the chief inspector of FAST’s operations and development center told the news agency AFP during a visit to the telescope, according to the French news site AFP.

China will accept requests this upcoming year (2021) from foreign scientists looking to use the instrument for their research, according to the report.

With its massive 1,600-foot (500 meters) diameter dish, FAST is not only larger than the now-destroyed Arecibo telescope, but it’s also three times more sensitive. FAST, which began full operations in January of this year, is also surrounded by a 3-mile (5 kilometers) “radio silence” zone in which cellphones and computers are not allowed.

“We drew a lot of inspiration from its [Arecibo’s] structure, which we gradually improved to build our telescope,” Qiming said.

Radio telescopes like FAST use antennas and radio receivers to detect radio waves from radio sources in the cosmos, like stars, galaxies and black holes. These instruments can also be used to send out radio signals and even reflect radio light from objects in the solar system (like planets) to see what information might bounce back.

Researchers may use FAST to not just explore the universe but also to study alien worlds, determining whether or not they rest in the “goldilocks zone” near their host star, and also search for alien life.

Famously, in 1974 at Arecibo, scientists working on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, or SETI, sent out an interstellar radio message to the globular cluster M13 in the hopes of receiving confirmation of intelligent extraterrestrial life. The message was co-authored by astronomer and science communicator Carl Sagan, helping to popularize Arecibo and radio astronomy in general.

climateprediction.net is a research project that uses Internet-connected computers to do research in climate science.

By running the model thousands of times we hope to find out how the model responds to slight tweaks to these approximations – slight enough to not make the approximations any less realistic.

This will allow us to improve our understanding of how sensitive our models are to small changes and also to things like changes in carbon dioxide and the sulphur cycle. This will allow us to explore how climate may change in the next century under a wide range of different scenarios.

T.Brada Experimental Grid

T.Brada Experimental Grid is running 3 Sub-projects:

1 – The Lua Alfa application is used to test the in-development Lua runtime. Aim of the project is to expand what is possible under the boinc platform and improve ease of deployment.
The application is limited to Linux and the tasks, will take few minutes at most.

2 – Symmetric Prime Tuples.
The search for Symmetric Prime Tuples is a continuation of deceased project Stop@home. We are searching for Symmetric k-Tuples of consecutive Primes, which are defined on the linked page, also there a article about prime k-tuples in general.
The search has been extended to twin prime tuples, symmetric twin prime tuples and prime tuple gaps. The search interval was extended as well.

3 – PADLS Total.
The PADLS Total subproject aims to find new pseudo-associative DLS as described by Natalia Makarova in this thread. Not a groundbreaking amount, but there are good results produced every day. Moreover this subproject produces a seemingly endless stream of workunits for us.

Additionally, we wish to contribute to the field of mathematics.
Lastly, primes play a central role in the cryptographic systems which are used for computer security. Through the study of prime numbers it can be shown how much processing is required to crack an encryption code and thus to determine whether current security schemes are sufficiently secure.
