Chess960@home (also styled Chess960athome) was a BOINC volunteer computing project that studied Chess960, also known as Fischer Random Chess, a chess variant invented by former world chess champion Bobby Fischer. Rather than searching for a scientific result in the physical sciences, Chess960@home asked volunteers' idle computers to play out and record large numbers of Chess960 games, with the stated goal of assembling a database large enough to begin identifying sound opening moves for a game whose starting position is chosen at random from 960 possibilities.[1][2]

Overview

Chess960 replaces the fixed classical chess starting position with one of 960 legal arrangements of the back-rank pieces, subject to the rule that a player's bishops must occupy opposite-colored squares and that the king must stand between the two rooks.[2] The number of legal arrangements follows directly from these constraints:

Four choices exist for a light-squared bishop and four for a dark-squared bishop, the queen may then occupy any of the six remaining squares, and the two identical knights fill two of the five squares left over, with the king and the two rooks filling the final three squares in a single valid order.

Because the starting position changes with every game, memorized classical opening theory is of little use in Chess960. Chess960@home's project idea was to let the BOINC client generate and play through very large numbers of these positions on volunteers' computers, accumulating a database of games that could then be analyzed for patterns of sound early play, an early attempt to bootstrap something resembling opening theory for the variant using distributed computing rather than manual analysis by strong players.[1]

History

Chess960@home's Wikidata entry records its inception as 20 March 2006, with the official website listed as chess960athome.org.[3] The project was listed among candidate and alpha-stage projects on BOINC's own project pages, described there simply as a study of "Chess-960.org", categorized under game study.[2] For much of its life the project ran from an "alpha" branch of its website, and volunteer communities such as BOINC.Italy directed participants to attach to it at chess960athome.org/alpha/ rather than the plain domain.[4]

The project found an audience within established BOINC volunteer communities; members of groups such as the UK BOINC Team listed Chess960@Home among the projects they contributed to alongside more established efforts like Einstein@Home and SETI@home.[5]

Decline

Volunteer reviewers writing in 2010 noted that the project's official forum saw an almost total absence of the administrators, leaving participants with little information about the state of the underlying research, even as the project continued to send out work intermittently.[1] According to the same community record, this pattern continued until February 2012, after which no further workunits were generated and the site displayed only a message indicating the project remained in a testing phase.[1]

The chess960athome.org website nonetheless stayed reachable for many years afterward. As late as its most recent recorded state, the homepage still described the project as being in a state of "productive tests" with account creation, workunit creation, and the scheduler all nominally enabled, while reporting zero units queued to crunch and listing a recent-activity figure of 7,501 users and 211 active hosts.[6] News posts on the site trailed off across the following decade; the most recent, dated 10 January 2022, thanked a new advertising sponsor for helping cover the cost of server backups.[6]

Relationship to a later, unrelated project

Chess960@home should not be confused with a later, independently created BOINC project also concerned with chess, Chess@Home (chess.qugate.org), which aimed to construct a chess-position classifier. When the newer project was announced in 2014, a BOINCstats forum participant asked whether it had any connection to "the old Chess960@Home"; the project's founder confirmed it did not, and that permission to use a similar name had been separately sought.[7]
